I originally created Airout because I wanted to keep up with NBA news. We don't get to watch all the games around here, but I want to keep up without having to watch ESPN or consume a full sports podcast.

Web search was added to OpenAI models last year and I was able to build Airout with a full custom web search pipeline. This enabled us to test and play much faster than what was possible even a year ago.

However, with OpenAI, about 15% of the time the model would return stale data. This would mean I would hear about Tuesdays NBA games on Wednesday (yay!) ... and again on Thursday (nay!).

Over the last few weeks, I went exploring more modern search tools. Crawlee, Firecrawl, Browser Use, and others to run a web search for every topic we have and then use that as context for the LLM. I learned a lot but none of these seemed worth the trade-off of having to maintain.

So I finally went back and tried the new Gemini Pro models. I was pleasantly surprised by the results. The model is much more accurate and consistent in its responses. I could tailor the results for a specific date and it would actually listen. I could ask for more details like "crucial plays", or "box scores" and it would give me the information I needed.

Looking Forward

Currently we only swapped out the research portion of our app to Gemini. We are hoping to explore other premium models for text-to-speech and figure out how to have multiple hosts for a podcast.
